What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy or ART, is a new form of psychotherapy that has recently emerged as quite efficient for use in treating trauma and other mental disorders. That is a short and evidence-based approach that is used as a fast way of making patients comfortable and get better.

The science of memory reconsolidation forms the basis of therapy. By accessing and altering how the brain stores distressing memories, participants in ART can learn to ‘overwrite’ negative images with positive ones. It results in a reduction of symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, for example.

What to Expect During an ART Session

• Initial Assessment: First your therapist will discuss your goals and what issues you want to address. An initial conversation sets the road map for therapy.
• Guided Imagery and Visualization: Your therapist will walk you through what’s called a process of visualization during the session. During this process, you will be asked to imagine or visualize particular scenarios or your memories in mind.
• Reframing and Resolution: You will be led to replace your distressing images with positive ones as the session continues. This process helps to decrease the emotional charge of negative memories.
• Immediate Feedback: ART sessions are interactive so you can give feedback to your therapist as you go along. By this, the therapy remains focused on the client and matches your specific needs.

The average session duration per client is between 60 to 90 minutes and clients find results after only one or two sessions. The number of sessions it will take to you has to do with how complex the issues you’re trying to address are, however.
